In some circumstances you may be told that you have been overpaid a particular benefit e.g. Working Tax Credit. If you do not agree you may be able to appeal.

Overpayments can be recovered by different means including deductions from ongoing claims or even through the same enforcement methods as a tax debt. If recovery of an overpayment will cause you hardship you may be able to reduce the amount at which you pay it back.

You should speak to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and ask for time to pay the overpayment back at a rate you can afford.

In cases of extreme hardship HMRC can consider writing off all or part of the debt. Phone us for advice if you are in this situation.
