Domestic rent arrears (284KB)

Your rights as a domestic tenant will depend on what type of tenancy you have.

This can be made more complicated if your premises are for combined domestic and business use. (In this case you may only have a business lease covering the whole of the property and in effect might not have the same rights as a domestic tenant, see business rent arrears.)

Contact your landlord as soon as possible to make an arrangement to pay towards the arrears on top of your normal monthly payment.

You should also check to see if you are entitled to claim Housing Benefit.

If your landlord takes further action against you, phone us for advice.
